'RUN FOR EDUCATION' RAISES $10,000 FOR BREAKTHROUGH FORT LAUDERDALE'
by Stu Opperman, APR, Vice President, Ambit Public Relations

More than 300 South Floridians, including Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle, recently participated in the 1st annual Breakthrough 5K Run for Education. The event raised $10,000, money that will provide scholarships to underserved Broward middle school students enrolled in the summer enrichment program Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale: Students Teaching Students. The fundraiser, which took place at the Coral Ridge Mall in Fort Lauderdale, featured the 5K run, a two-mile walk, and one-mile kid's fun run. Many of the 87 Breakthrough students and their families took part, as did Board members and representatives of Pine Crest School, which hosts the Breakthrough program.

"We are very grateful to receive this level of support from the mayor and community," said Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale Executive Director Aaron Bass.  "Because of their efforts, many deserving, motivated students will have the opportunity to proactively improve their future." All Breakthrough students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and receive full scholarships to attend the academically intense program.

Selected from Margate, Dandy, Sunrise, and Rickards middle schools, students learn the academic, organizational, and social skills needed to succeed in college preparatory high school programs during six-week summer programs prior to their 7th and 8th grade years and also attend tutorial sessions during the school year. Once they enter high school, Breakthrough "alumni" are provided mentors to help> with SAT prep, college tours, and scholarship opportunities until the student successfully transitions into a collegiate program.A unique feature of the program is that its teachers are drawn from a diverse group of  talented high school and college students from universities such as  Stanford, Brown, and Dartmouth who are role models for the younger students and receive valuable, hands-on training to prepare for careers in education.
