We are incredibly excited to launch our "Announcements" section in this week's e-newsletter.  As you can see, this section features important moments in the lives of our alumni - marriages, births, graduations, achievements - all topped off with amazing photos.  Thank you to all who sent us updates already - we are really looking forward to hearing more from everyone! 




Community Updates


April 22nd - ALL Atlanta alumni are invited to the first SBAN Atlanta Meet and Greet to be held  at the SBAN office, 520 East Paces Ferry Rd., Atlanta, GA  30305, from 2 - 4pm.  Please contact Andre Merriweather (BT Atlanta teacher) at amerriweather@sbalumni.org  for more information.

May 3rd - Gloria Estefan will be the guest speaker at the SB Miami Spring Graduation Celebration on at 6pm.  For more information, call (305)460-8821.


The First Annual SBAN New York Fundraiser

May 8th - Darren Isom (teacher, SB New Orleans (Franklin) and SB Miami) is organizing the first annual SBAN New York fundraiser for all alumni living in New York. If you are interested in helping organize this event please email Darren at disom@sbalumni.org.

Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale's 5k Run With The Mayor

May 20th - Come join Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale as we run for education at the Coral Ridge Mall. All proceeds from the event will benefit the students and teachers of Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale.

SBAN's Featured Opportunity #1: American Youth Policy Forum


American Youth Policy Forum

Program Assistant


The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) is seeking a Program Assistant to join our non-profit team dedicated to providing learning events to youth policymakers. 


The Program Assistant works on tasks related to AYPF lunchtime forums and field trips, supporting senior staff in organizing lists of invitees, emailing letters of invitation, posting event information on the website, tracking attendance and maintaining participant lists, organizing logistics for meetings and travel, and collecting and reporting on event feedback. In this position, you will help maintain, update, and manage our Microsoft Access database of individuals who attend AYPF events and purchase our publications. This position interacts with a large number of individuals and organizations, both on Capitol Hill and in Washington, DC, so candidates must be able to demonstrate that they can communicate clearly and be detail oriented. 


Other duties in this position include developing mailing lists for press releases and managing mailings of reports and publications; maintaining statistics and report to staff on AYPF event participants and publication sales; maintaining and uploading new information to our website (www.aypf.org) in coordination with the AYPF webmaster; and responding to information requests, general administrative support, and providing back-up phone support.


Qualified candidates will:


·      have 2 years database management work experience,

·      be able to identify, document, and troubleshoot database problems,

·      be able to coordinate maintenance tasks, produce reports and run queries, and understand basic programming concepts (file definitions, data types, inputs/outputs),

·      be proficient in Microsoft Access and have good understanding of Microsoft Excel,

·      be proficient in Microsoft Word and Netscape software,

·      have knowledge of Microsoft FrontPage and FTP software for maintaining website,

·      have a minimum typing speed of 60 wpm, and

·      excellent interpersonal skills and follow through.


This position requires a well-organized approach to handling many details with the ability to multi-task; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently in a small organization (10 staff); ability to prioritize; a willingness to learn new things; and a sense of humor.

SBAN's Featured Opportunity #2: City Year Rhode Island Is Hiring!



Hi Everyone,

City Year Rhode Island is hiring two staff members: a Service Director and a Training Manager.  These are plum positions, and Summerbridge/Breakthrough alumni are especially welcome.  Here are the highlights of the positions:

The Service Director is responsible for developing and implementing the site’s service strategy and ensuring overall service excellence.  The Service Director leads the staff and corps on training, service activities and evaluation, manages relationships with service partners, and ensures resources are secured for successful service.


The Training Manager is responsible for defining the training and development elements of City Year’s Youth Civic Leadership Curriculum and new Social Entrepreneur curriculum.  The Training Manager will lead the design, planning, and execution of Basic Training, Advanced Training, Service Training, Fellows Training, and ongoing training that is delivered to the corps as a whole.

Congratulations to Brandon (BT Atlanta student and teacher) and Johnnjalyn (BT Atlanta teacher) who will renew their wedding vows in July. Their beautiful baby boy Isaiah (BT Atlanta class of 2022) will serve as best man.

Teo Thomas Gonzales was born May 8, 2005. Jennifer Hartle and Al Gonzales (BT San Francisco teacher, BT Providence teacher, San Francisco Day School founding Director) are proud and happy parents. Teo is the first child for Jennifer and Al and the first grandchild on both sides!
